The Biggest Thing I Learned As A Homeowner
Mmmm, my first blog post dedicated to home + shelter. This topic is truly engrained in me—for as long as I can remember I have always cultivated and curated my space. From taping magazine clip outs all over my walls to drooling over the PB Kids catalog as a 10-year-old, I have always wanted to create a space that felt just right.
However, as a homeowner, I’ve realized this is not as easy as I assumed.
When I was a college kid living in a 6-bedroom house, I could quickly get my personal bedroom room just right in little to no time. A few posters on the wall, an organized desk, and I was done…but curating a home is different than anywhere else I’ve ever lived. Suddenly an entire building is yours to create and experiment and truly build a space that nourishes you. I have absolutely LOVED this process of making a house into a home, but I’ll admit it took me longer than expected to get our house feeling just right. With time, I realized that this feeling wasn’t about furniture or the macrame hanging on the wall—it was about something different altogether…
A JOURNAL ENTRY WRITTEN MONTHS AFTER MOVING INTO OUR LITTLE HOME ON THE WATER:
To me, a house becomes a home the moment you start to develop those little quirky places—your "spots.”
Ya know, the particular hook where you always seem to drape your scarf the moment you walk through the door. Or that one stool at the dinner table that you always mindlessly choose to sit on. Down the road, the crooked pine tree that marks your favorite running route, and the feeling of the comfortable, overused indent in the left couch cushion. Even the little windowsill that has become way too cluttered holding all your keys and mail...it's those little places that gain personality and purpose with time and repetition.
✨
These spots don't just start day one—they evolve, they emerge, some stick, and some don't. But these little spots are what make your house different from any other building on the block. THAT'S what makes a home. It's not about whether your countertops are granite or if your landscaping is pristine—home is where you can look at your scarf, hanging on an average nail, and say, "perfect.”
✨✨✨✨
I have been absolutely loving the inch by inch and habit by habit process of this old little cabin becoming our home—and I cannot wait to share it with you. Do you have anything in particular that you’d love me to cover home-wise? Drop it in a comment below! I am overflowing with topics spinning in my head, but I’m unsure of what would be most helpful to YOU. :)
I truly believe our physical space dictates so much of our mental space, and I cannot wait to dig into this topic with you cuties!
